Slip of a National tongue puts Labour in power

Mt Victoria voters heard it first – Grant Robertson will be the next Finance Minister, according to his National Party opponent.

Nicola Willis said Robertson would be too busy as Finance Minister to worry about Wellington, when they fronted the local meeting at the Tararua Tramping Club.

The candidates were asked what their government would do for Wellington amid a campaign dominated by Auckland based policies.

“I think too often, because parliamentarians live here, Wellington is an afterthought,” Willis said.

“While I’m sure Grant has done lots of great work in the community, his focus will be on managing the books.”

After some laughs from the crowd, Willis was quick to add: “if he’s the Finance Minister.”

The meeting began just as Colmar Brunton/One News released its second poll for the week showing National at its lowest since 2005.

Labour kept its lead at 43% while National dropped to 39%.

The preferred Prime Minister poll also shifted slightly, with Jacinda Arden up one point to 35% while Bill English dropped to 31%.

The Mt Victoria Residents Association narrowed down questions to four for the candidate panel which also included James Shaw (Green Party), Andy Foster (ACT Party), Geoff Simmons (The Opportunities Party) and Gayaal Iddamalgoda (Independent Party)

As well as Wellington’s needs, they covered housing, climate change, and transport.

Robertson and Willis faced off on transport, with Robertson saying National is over-investing in roads.

“It’s called NZTA, not NZRA. Transport, not roading. Now roading is part of transport, but it’s not the only part of it.”

Willis says roads have to be part of transport strategy.

“I am unabashed in saying that roading is part of the solution for Wellington’s transport future,” she says.

“There are ways we can make vehicles less costly in terms of the environment, but they are part of our future and we need to transport infrastructure that supports that.”
